We can't solve equations without at least understanding the principle of equations without understanding "what plus 6 is 9?" and "What's the additive inverse of 4?" if I want to solve x+4=2
These skills are necessary for College Algebra and are explored in depth in Abstract Algebra. The additive inverse is not always an integer and doesn't exist for every number system. For instance, natural numbers, cardinal numbers( 1,2,3....) and ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd...)do not have additive inverses:
Thus, for example, we can say that natural numbers do have additive inverses, but because these additive inverses are not themselves natural numbers, the set of natural numbers is not closed under taking additive inverses.
